Left-hander Eric Stults will be taking the mound on Friday night for the San Diego Padres as they take on Tom Koehler and the Miami Marlins. Stults didn't have as great of a year in 2013 as he did in 2012, but he did pitch 200 innings for the first time in his career. His 3.93 ERA seems to suggest that he had a below-average year, but his 3.53 FIP shows that more hits dropped in than probably should have. If he can maintain the 1.77 BB/9 rate that he had last year, he should have a pretty good season for the Padres.

Reed Johnson has done pretty well against Stults so far in their matchups by getting four hits in nine at-bats against the lefty. Jeff Baker has just one hit in six career at-bats against him.

Tom Koehler made 23 starts for the Marlins in 2013 and posted a 4.41 ERA in 143 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander will either need to up his strikeout rate (5.79 K/9) or lower his walk rate (3.40 BB/9) if he wants to stay in Miami's rotation this season.

Koehler hasn't faced any of the current Padres more than once, so the pitcher and the hitters will be learning about each other on the fly on Friday. Chase Headley is the only Padre who has a hit against Koehler.
