Tuesday night the San Diego Padres’ Robbie Erlin will take the mound against the Cleveland Indians’ Zach McAllister.   Erlin will be making his first start of the season and McAllister will be making his second.

Robbie Erlin saw some action in relief last week but this time he will be making the start. Nothing can be taken away from his 2/3 of inning appearance other than the fact that he got a strikeout.  Tuesday’s start will only be the 10th of his career.   His career numbers show that he can get strikeouts while giving up few walks and that attribute should serve him well in the future.

Erlin is only in his 2nd year in the majors and has limited experience against most teams.  He has only faced one Cleveland Indian, Elliot Johnson.  Johnson has 1 hit in 3 at-bats.

Zach McAllister’s first start of the season was a disastrous 4 inning outing where he gave up 3 runs on 6 hits.  He struck out 4 but he walked 4 as well.  Finding the strike zone was tough for him as most of his pitches were balls. Fortunately for him, he got a no decision for his effort.   Last season, McAllister went 9 – 9 in 24 starts for the Indians with an ERA of 3.75.   

McAllister has experience facing just one San Diego Padre, Seth Smith.  Smith is batting .333 against McAllister with 2 hits and 2 strikeouts in 6 at-bats.
