The San Diego Padres will travel to Great American Ball Park to take on the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. The San Diego Padres will send Tyson Ross to the mound while the Reds will counter with Alfredo Simon.
Ross was able to get his fourth win of the season by pitching seven innings and only giving up one earned run while striking out seven batters when he faced the Miami Marlins on Friday. Ross has been a nice surprise for the Padres this year getting his second quality start in as many outings. He’s gotten a win in four of his last six starts with only one loss putting his overall record at 4-3 on the year with a 3.02 ERA. He’ll be looking to continue the trend when he faces the Reds on Thursday.
Ross has faced current Reds hitters 33 times in his career only giving up eight hits for a .242 average. He hasn’t given up an extra base hits and has struck out six. Cincinnati is toward the bottom of the league in runs per game so Ross will try to keep them from moving up the rankings.
Alfredo Simon will oppose Ross when he takes the mound on Thursday. Simon is coming off his worst start of the season when he faced the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Simon only got through three innings and gave up five earned runs over eight hits with a walk. Simon had pitched well before that and still has a record of 4-2 with a 2.89 ERA so we’ll take this as a hiccup but he’ll have to get back on track or this could turn into a downward spiral. He’ll be facing a team that he hasn’t pitched against much.
Current San Diego hitters hold a .235 average when facing Simon with four hits, a home run, and five RBIs. The four hits come from Yonder Alonso and Will Venable who also account for all five RBI.
