Saturday afternoon, the San Diego Padres and Tyson Ross will face the Chicago White Sox and Andre Rienzo.  Ross will make his 12th start of the season as Rienzo makes his 8th start and 9th appearance.

Tyson Ross pitched to a no-decision in his last outing and that left his record at 5 – 4 with an ERA of 2.97.  In that start, Ross gave up 5 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings of work.  He didn’t issue any walks as he struck out 4.  Ross’ numbers this season are on pace to be a big improvement over last year’s results when he went 3 – 8 with a 3.17 ERA in 16 starts and 19 relief appearances.   

In 2013, Ross didn’t face the White Sox and he has only faced 5 of Chicago’s hitters in his career.  Of those 5, Paul Konerko has the best results, going 2 for 4 with a homer and 2 RBIS against Ross.

Andre Rienzo got his first loss of the season in his last outing and that gives him a 4 – 1 record with a 3.95 ERA coming into this start.  In his previous start, Rienzo allowed 5 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings of work with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.   It was clearly his worst start of the season.  Rienzo has already posted better numbers than last season when he went 2 – 3 with a 4.82 ERA in 10 starts during his rookie campaign.

In 2013, Rienzo didn’t face the Padres and he has no experience against the San Diego lineup.  But if he can fix the problems that he had in his last start, he should be able to handle the Padres.
