Friday evening, the San Diego Padres will put the ball in the hands of Odrisamer Despaigne as they square off against the Atlanta Braves and Alex Wood. Despaigne makes his 6^th start as Wood makes his 13^th start and 24^th appearance.

Odrisamer Despaigne pitched to a no-decision in his last start and that held his record at 2 - 1 with a 1.31 ERA. It was a solid outing for Despaigne as he held the opposition to a run on 2 hits in 7.2 innings. He didn't issue any walks and struck out 3 batters. The rookie right-hander from Cuba has only allowed 5 runs in his 5 starts and has gone at least 6 innings every time he has taken the mound. With run support, Despaigne could have easily been undefeated up to this point. Prior to getting called up at the end of June, Despaigne was 1 -3 with a 6.03 ERA in 2 starts at Double-A San-Antonio and 5 starts at triple-A El Paso.

Even without experience against the Braves, Despaigne has a good chance of coming away with a victory if he continues pitching as well as he has so far.

Alex Wood evened his record at 7 -7 with a 3.24 ERA after getting the win in his last start. In the victory, Wood gave up just a run (on a solo homer) and 3 hits in 6 innings of work. He didn't issue any walks while striking out 8. Wood has turned in some gems as a starter and the Braves will be looking for more quality outings from him the rest of the way. Last season, Wood was 3 - 3 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts and 20 relief appearances.

In 2013, Wood pitched just an inning in relief against the Padres and didn't allow anything while striking out a batter. Only Yasmani Grandal has faced Wood and he struck out in his only at-bat against the lefty.
