Monday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Pirates will give the ball to Gerrit Cole (7 – 4, 3.65 ERA) as they face the St. Louis Cardinals and Lance Lynn (14 – 8, 2.79 ERA).  Cole makes his 17th start as Lynn makes his 28th.

Gerrit Cole pitched to his 2nd straight no-decision in his last start. In 6 innings of work, Cole allowed 2 runs and 3 hits while walking a batter and striking out 9.  Cole didn’t show any signs of the shoulder fatigue that hit him earlier in the season as he threw 108 pitches.  In his last 10 starts, Cole has a respectable 4 -2 record considering his time on the disabled list.  In his rookie season in 2013, Cole went 10 – 7 with a 3.22 ERA in 19 starts.

Last season, Cole didn’t face the Cardinals but he has seen a lot of them this season. He is 1 - 1 in 3 starts against St. Louis this season. 

Lance Lynn was solid his last time out but didn’t record the decision.  Lynn allowed 2 runs and 6 hits (including a homer) in 6 innings.  He walked 3 while striking out 3.  Lynn has been extremely sharp in recent weeks and has allowed 2 or fewer runs in 9 of his last 10 outings.  He is 6 - 2 in those 10 trips to the hill.  In 2013, Lynn posted a record of 15 – 10 with an ERA of 3.97 in 33 starts.      

Last season, Lynn was 2 – 1 with a 5.60 ERA in 5 starts against the Pirates.  He just made the start against Pittsburgh and is 1 - 1 in 3 starts this season against the Pirates.
