Edinson Volquez will go for his eighth win of the season when he and the Pittsburgh Pirates face 23-year-old Shelby Miller and the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night.

Last Saturday, Edinson Volquez pitched seven very good innings against the Philadelphia Phillies at home and came away with his third consecutive win. He gave up just one run on four hits in that game and walked four batters while striking out five. Volquez currently has a 7-6 record on the season with a 3.88 ERA and he has given up just 91 hits in 102 innings.

Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday has 10 hits in his 27 at-bats against Volquez with a double, two home runs and five RBI. Catcher Yadier Molina has also hit a home run off of him, but he is just 4-for-26 overall against the right-hander.

Shelby Miller ended up with a no decision in his outing against the Miami Marlins last weekend after giving up three runs in 5.1 innings of work. He allowed nine hits in that start and struck out two batters while walking one. Miller is only striking out 6.2 batters per nine innings this season, which is his lowest strikeout rate in his three-year career.

Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez only has four hits in 18 at-bats against Miller in his career, but he has also hit three home runs off of him. Catcher Russell Martin is 4-for-11 against Miller with a double and two home runs.
