Wednesday evening, the Pittsburgh Pirates will take the field behind Francisco Liriano as they take on the San Diego Padres and Ian Kennedy. It will be the 13th start for both pitchers.

Francisco Liriano finally got his first win of the season in his last start.  It took his record to 1 – 5 with an ERA of 3.42.  In that outing, Liriano pitched 5 innings of shutout ball and gave up just 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8.  With just 1 win, it will be tough for Liriano to match last season’s 16 - 8 record and 3.02 ERA in 26 starts.

In 2013, Liriano won his only start against the Padres after pitching 7 scoreless innings and allowing just 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 13.  Overall, he has held the Padres to just a .200 batting average and only 4 Padres have hits off of him.

Ian Kennedy picked up his second straight win in his last start and that boosted his record to 4 – 6 with a 3.42 ERA.  In that outing, Kennedy gave up just a run on 4 hits with 3 walks and 9 strikeouts in 6 innings of work.  He should be able to improve on last year’s numbers when he went 7 – 10 with a 4.91 ERA in 31 starts with the Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In 2013, Kennedy was 1- 1 with a 5.06 ERA in 2 starts against the Pirates. Kennedy will have to watch out for Pittsburgh’s Ike Davis.  Davis is 4 of 9 with 4 home runs and 4 RBIS against the right-hander.
