Tuesday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates will take the field behind Edinson Volquez (11 – 7, 3.31 ERA) as they take on the Philadelphia Phillies and David Buchanan (6 – 7, 3.95 ERA).  It will be the 28th start and 29th appearance for Volquez and the 17th start for Buchanan. 

Edinson Volquez pitched a decent outing in his last start but ended up with his 2nd straight no-decision.  Volquez threw 6.1 shutout innings and allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks as he fanned 5 batters.  Volquez has been inconsistent in his last few starts but he brings a 4 -1 record in his last 10 starts into this one.  In 2013, Volquez finished the season with a 9 -12 record and a 5.71 ERA in 32 starts and a relief appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. 

Volquez didn’t pitch against the Phillies last season but he had a start against Philadelphia earlier this season.  Volquez got the win in that game after holding the Phillies to a run (on a solo homer) and 4 hits in 7 innings.

David Buchanan got his 3rd straight no-decision in his last outing.  Buchanan was fortunate to escape with a no-decision after allowing 4 runs on 3 hits (including a homer) in just 4 innings.  He walked 4 while striking out just 2.  Buchanan has had some good start and some bad ones in recent weeks.  He is 3 - 4 in his last 10 starts.  At Triple-A Lehigh Valley before getting the call to Philadelphia, Buchanan made 9 starts and was 5 -1 with a 3.98 ERA.

Buchanan had a start against the Pirates earlier this season and he took the loss that day after allowing 3 runs and 6 hits (including a home run) in 6 innings.
