Monday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Brandon Cumpton will face the New York Mets and Jacob deGrom.   Both pitchers will be making their 3rd starts of the season.

Brandon Cumpton pitched to a no decision in his last start and that left his record at 0 – 1 as his ERA rose sharply to 4.26.  In that outing, Cumpton gave up 4 runs on 7 hits in 5.2 innings of work.  He didn’t issue a single walk as he struck out 4.  Cumpton should get the opportunity to start more games this season than he did in 2013 when he started 5 games and finished with a 2 – 1 record and an ERA of 2.05.

Last season, Cumpton didn’t face the Mets and he has no experience against the New York lineup. Hopefully some time with the scouting report will give him enough knowledge about the batters he is going to face for the first time.

Jacob deGrom fell to 0 – 2 with an ERA of 2.77 after his 2nd Major League start.  His numbers were tough to look at as he allowed 3 runs (on 3 homers) on 4 hits in 6 innings of work.   He walked 3 while striking out 4.  The line was not as great as the one in his big league debut but he is still a young pitcher and he will have a lot of time to improve. 

deGrom is still in his first Major League season and ever team he faces will be a new experience.  With help from the scouting report and the rest of the pitching staff, he should have a chance to get his first Major League victory.
