Tuesday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates will give the ball to Edinson Volquez as they take on the New York Mets and Jonathon Niese. Volquez will be making his 10th start and 11th appearance as Niese makes his 10th start.

Edinson Volquez improved his record to 2 – 4 with a 4.37 ERA after winning his last start.  Volquez was solid as he surrendered just a run (on a solo homer) on 3 hits in 6 innings of work as he walked 2 and struck out 4.  Last season, Volquez was just 9 - 12 with an ERA of 5.71 in 32 starts and 1 relief appearance with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres.

In 2013, Volquez was 1 – 1 with a 9.00 ERA in 2 starts against the Mets.  But his numbers against the Mets aren’t that bad as he has held them to a .234 average with 18 hits, a home run and 9 RBIs in 77 at-bats.

Jonathon Niese evened his record to 3 – 3 with a 2.70 ERA after getting the win in his last outing.  In that start, Niese gave up 3 runs on 4 hits (including a homer) in 7 innings of work. He issued 3 walks as he struck out 5.  In 2013, Niese finished the season with an 8 - 8 record and an ERA of 3.71 in 24 starts.   

Last season, Niese took a pounding in his only start against the Pirates.  He gave up 8 runs on 8 hits in just 4.1 innings to take the loss.  Pittsburgh’s Clint Barmes will be happy to see Niese as he is batting .357 with a homer and 4 RBIs against the left-hander.
