Sunday afternoon the Pittsburgh Pirates will take the field behind Charlie Morton as they face the Milwaukee Brewers and Kyle Lohse.  Morton and Lohse will each be making their 3rd starts of the season.

Charlie Morton’s two starts of the season were wins for the Pirates even though he received no decisions.  His last start was rough though as he allowed 5 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings. Morton struck out 5 while walking 1.  Last season, Morton started 20 games for the Pirates and earned a 7 – 4 record with a 3.26 ERA.

In 2013, Morton was stellar in 3 starts against the Brewers. He went 2 – 0 with an ERA of 0.57.   Morton gave up 4 runs on 14 hits in 15.2 innings.   As with most pitchers, Morton will need to stay away from Ryan Braun.  Braun has 6 hits in 11 at-bats with 5 RBIs against the Pittsburgh right-hander. 

Kyle Lohse got the win in his last start but he wasn’t that great.  He gave up 3 runs (all earned) on 7 hits in just 5 innings.  Lohse struck out 4 and walked 5 as he threw 107 pitches in such a short span of time.  Last season, Lohse compiled an 11 – 10 record in 32 starts for the Brewers. 

Lohse had trouble with the Pirates last season.  He faced them 3 times and surrendered 7 runs on 18 hits in just 12.2 innings.  Many of the Pirates have seen Lohse before but Jose Tabata will be one to watch.  Tabata owns a .500 average against Lohse with 13 hits and 4 RBIs in 26 at-bats.
