Friday night Francisco Liriano of the Pittsburgh Pirates will face Wily Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers.  Liriano will be making his 3rd start of the year while Peralta will be making his 2nd start. 

Francisco Liriano’s last start didn’t go well at all as he gave up 4 runs on 7 hits in just 6 innings of work.  Three of those runs came in the 1st inning.   So far in just 2 starts, Liriano is averaging over 104 pitches per start which is well above his career average of 93.2. 

Last season Liriano went 2 – 1 in 3 starts against the Brewers.  But in 14.2 innings, he gave up 9 runs on 20 hits even though he struck out 17.   Milwaukee’s Carlos Gomez is batting.500 against Liriano with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs and will look to add more to his stats in this one.

Wily Peralta had a rough go of it in his first start of the season.  Peralta gave up 5 hits and 5 runs in just 5 innings.  Even with the 6 strikeouts that he got, it was still too much.   For a pitcher that went 11 – 15 in 32 starts last year, Peralta will have to show some improvement to remain in the starting rotation.

Last year, the Pirates hit Peralta pretty well in his only start against them.  Peralta got the win despite giving up 9 hits and 3 runs in 6 innings.   Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen and Jordy Mercer each are 1 for 3 with an RBI against Peralta in their careers and McCutchen has a home run.
