Saturday night Edinson Volquez gets the start for the Pittsburgh Pirates as they face Yovani Gallardo and the Milwaukee Brewers.  Volquez will be making his 3rd appearance and 2nd start as Gallardo makes his 3rd start.

Edinson Volquez turned in a good performance in his 1st start of the season.  He went 5.2 innings and surrendered a run on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and a walk but failed to get a decision.   Last season, Volquez went 9 – 12 in 32 starts and 1 relief appearance as he split his time between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres.  His ERA was 5.71, which is around the range it has hovered as he enters his 10th major league season.

In 2013, Volquez went 2 – 0 in his 2 starts against Milwaukee with an ERA of 2.19.  If Volquez is smart, he will pitch around Ryan Braun.  Braun has a .357 average with 10 hits, a homer and 3 RBIs against Volquez.

Yovani Gallardo comes into this one after winning his first two starts.  Gallardo pitched 6.2 innings of shutout ball in his last outing, giving up 7 hits while striking out 3 without issuing any walks.   It’s a good start for Gallardo after last season’s 12 – 10 record in 31 starts which produced a career high ERA of 4.18. 

Gallardo went 2 – 2 with an ERA of 2.61 in 5 starts against the Pirates in 2013.  In his career, Gallardo has had trouble getting past Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen.   McCutchen has 11 hits, 2 home runs and 5 RBIs against Gallardo in 37 at-bats.
