Friday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates will give the ball to Jeff Locke as they take on the Miami Marlins and Nathan Eovaldi. Locke makes his 3rd start as Eovaldi makes his 14th. 

Jeff Locke took the loss in his last outing and it dropped his record to 0 - 1 with a 5.11 ERA.  Locke gave up a run on 3 hits in 7 innings as he walked 1 and struck out 5.  Even with the loss, the start was much better than his first one, where he surrendered 6 runs on 8 hits in 5.1 innings.  Locke should get some time to improve further as he replaces starter Gerrit Cole, who is on the 15 Day DL with shoulder fatigue.  Last season, Locke was 10 – 7 with a 3.52 ERA in 30 starts.

In 2013, Locke was 0 – 1 with a 3.65 ERA in 2 starts against the Marlins. And Miami has hit Locke well in the past as they own a collective .341 average with 14 hits, a homer and 2 RBIs in 41 at-bats.

Nathan Eovaldi pitched to his 2nd straight no-decision in his last start and that held his record at 4 – 2 as his ERA rose slightly to 3.27.  In that start, Eovaldi surrendered 3 runs on 6 hits in 7.2 innings as he walked a batter and struck out 8.  In less starts this season (13) than last (18) Eovaldi has already posted better numbers than 2013’s 4- 6 record and 3.39 ERA.

Last season, Eovaldi didn’t face the Pirates and he has only opposed 3 of the hitters on the Pittsburgh roster.  Clint Barmes is 0 for 2 and Andrew McCutchen is 1 for 1.  But Ike Davis is batting .300 with 2 homers and 6 RBIs.
