Sunday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Pirates will send Vance Worley to the mound to take on the Miami Marlins and Henderson Alvarez.  Worley will be making his 2014 debut as Alvarez makes his 14th start. 

 The injury bug that has hit the Pittsburgh starting rotation hard has led the Pirates to summoning Vance Worley from Triple-A Indianapolis to make this start.  Worley was scheduled to make a start Friday night but once he was scratched from the lineup card, many assumed that he would be going back to the Majors.  This season in Indianapolis, Worley was 2 - 3 with a 4.30 in 7 starts.

Last season, Worley was 1 – 5 with a 7.21 ERA in 10 starts for the Minnesota Twins.   Worley won’t have much time to study the scouting report but he has enough big league experience to rely on for this start. 

Henderson Alvarez pitched to a no-decision in his last outing and that held his record at 3 - 3 with a 2.56 ERA.   In that start, Alvarez went 5.1 innings and gave up 2 runs on 7 hits.  He struck out 5 without issuing a single walk.  Although Alvarez left the game with a sore hip, he should be fine for this start.  Last season, Alvarez was 5 – 6 with a 3.59 ERA in 17 starts.

In 2013, Alvarez was 1 – 0 with a 2.08 ERA in 2 starts against the Pirates.   He has handled the Pittsburgh lineup well in the past as he has held them to a .226 average with 12 hits, a homer and 7 RBIs in 53 at-bats.
