Young right-hander Gerrit Cole will be on the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night and will go up against Dan Haren and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

23-year-old Gerrit Cole ended up with a no decision after going six innings against the Washington Nationals last weekend. He pitched six innings in that game and gave up two earned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out seven. He has now pitched 64.2 innings this year and has struck out 60 batters while walking just 21.

Andre Ethier has shown that he can hit Cole in his three at-bats against the right-hander by getting two hits against him with two RBI. Right fielder Yasiel Puig has gotten a hit in all three of his at-bats against Cole.

Dan Haren lost for the second straight start when he was beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies on the road last Saturday. He pitched six innings in that start and allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out seven. He still has a solid 3.16 ERA on the year and he has given up just six home runs through 62.2 innings.

Pirates catcher Russell Martin has struggled mightily against Haren in his career, going just 8-for-41 with 10 strikeouts against him. Reigning NL MVP Andrew McCutchen is 4-for-9 against Haren with a double, two home runs and four RBI.
