Ryne Sandberg hopes to rebuild the Phillies into title contention as he begins his first full season as an MLB manager. The market for free agent pitcher A.J. Burnett didn't net the multi-year contract the 37-year-old would have liked but he stilled signed a 1 year, $16 million deal to join the Phillies. After a 16 win season in 2012 with Pittsburgh, Burnett managed just a 10-11 record a year ago. His 3.30 ERA was actually the best in 7 years but it didn't translate to wins on the mound very often. Texas counters with Martin Perez in his third season in the big leagues. Perez showed potential as a 22-year-old last year going 10-6 in 20 starts. Perez struggled in the Spring though with an 0-2 record and a 6.23 ERA. He allowed 9 runs in 13 innings this spring including 2 HR. Only three Phillies have ever faced the young left hander with each getting one hit in a combined 8 AB.
