Cliff Lee and the Philadelphia Phillies will face off against Tanner Scheppers and the Texas Rangers in an early season interleague matchup. Lee had a fantastic season in 2013 despite his team's struggles. He pitched a gaudy 222 innings and had a 2.87 ERA while striking out nine hitters per nine innings. This wasn't Lee's best season, but he was still able to get the sixth-most votes for the AL Cy Young award.
Lee has plenty of experience facing Rangers' hitters from his time in the AL and some interleague matchups. The player he has faced the most on their team, Adrian Beltre, hasn't had a lot of success against Lee, hitting just .125 in 33 appearances against the lefty. Prince Fielder is the only current Ranger who has hit a homer against Lee.
Tanner Scheppers is coming into this season as a starter for the first time and his hoping to build off of his great year as a reliever in 2013. He finished last season with a 1.88 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and 59 strikeouts in 76 innings for Texas.
Scheppers has only faced one hitter on the Phillies' team (Ben Revere), so it should give him the advantage going into this matchup. The Rangers will certainly have tape on the 6' 4" right-hander, but never seeing his 97 mph fastball before will probably work against them.
