Rookie starter David Buchanan will be on the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night when they face seven-game winner Shelby Miller and the St. Louis Cardinals.

David Buchanan was able to beat the Chicago Cubs last weekend to improve to 2-3 on the season. He went five innings in that outing and allowed three earned runs, which were all on solo home runs, and he struck out five while walking one. Buchanan has had a tough start to his Major League career, with a 5.97 ERA through 28.2 innings.

All of the Cardinals will be going up against Buchanan for the first time on Thursday. So far this year, right-handed hitters have a .300 batting average against him, while left-handed hitters have a .277 batting average.

Over the weekend, Shelby Miller pitched pretty well against the Washington Nationals, but all he could get out of the start was a no decision. He pitched 6.2 innings in that game and allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking four. Miller is 7-5 in 2014 with a 3.42 ERA and he has only given up 72 hits in 84.1 innings of work.

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has two singles in three at-bats against Miller in his career, while veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd is just 1-for-5 against him with a double and three strikeouts.
