Thursday afternoon, the Philadelphia Phillies will take the field behind David Buchanan (6 – 8, 3.77 ERA) as they square off against the Miami Marlins and Tom Koehler (9 -10, 3.76 ERA).  Buchanan makes his 20th start as Koehler makes his 32nd.

David Buchanan broke his string of 5 straight no-decisions with a loss in his last outing.  In the defeat, Buchanan allowed 3 runs and 6 hits through 6.2 innings of work. He walked 2 and struck out 6.  Buchanan hasn’t had a win since early August, but he has pitched well since then.  Lack of offense and a shaky bullpen wasted a few of his better efforts.  He is just 2 -3 in his last 10 outings. Buchanan was 6 - 2 with a 3.95 ERA in 12 starts down at Triple-A Lehigh Valley before getting the call to Philadelphia.

Tom Koehler got his first decision since mid-August in his last start but that decision was a loss.  Koehler gave up 3 runs and 6 hits (including a home run) in 5 innings.  He walked 4 and struck out 5. Koehler hasn’t dominated anyone in recent weeks and is just 2 - 3 in his last 10 starts.  In 2013, Koehler went 5 -10 with a 4.41 ERA in 23 starts and 6 relief appearances.

Last season, Koehler was 0 – 1 with a 9.00 ERA in a start and a relief appearance against the Phillies.  This season, he is 1 - 0 in 3 starts against Philadelphia.
