Travis Wood takes the mound for the Cubs in their home opener as they celebrate the 100th year of Wrigley Field. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg knows a thing or two about having success in Wrigley and sends Roberto Hernandez to the mound to play spoiler on Chicago's big day. The 6'4” right-hander who was once known as Fausto Carmona makes his Phillies debut after signing a 1-year, $14.5 million contract in the offseason. Philadelphia is definitely taking a chance on Hernandez who went just 6-13 last year with the Rays posting an ERA of 4.89.
It's been an up and down Spring for Hernandez after allowing 10 ER in 17 IP for a 5.29 ERA. Sandberg is hoping a switch to the NL is the career boost that Hernandez needs after spending 8 years in the AL. Only 5 Cub players have ever faced Hernandez with Ryan Sweeney the only Chicago player seeing more than 3AB going just 2 for 15 (.133) in his career.
Left-hander Travis Wood was a pleasant surprise for the Cubs last season even if his success didn't necessarily transfer to notches in the win column. Wood started 32 games and was an inning-eater, notching 200 IP for the first time, but despite a career low 3.13 ERA he only posted a 9-12 win loss record. Wood has failed to reach double figure wins in any of his previous 4 seasons as a full-time starter but looks to get off to a fast start pitching on a 1-year $3.9 million arbitration contract.
Wood pitched only 13.2 innings this Spring going 1-2 with a 4.61 ERA. He does have some experience with Philly after facing them once a year ago while pitching 6.1 innings. He gave up 2 runs and got a no-decision in a 5-2 Cubs win. Phillies batters Marlon Byrd and Jimmy Rollins are the only players to face Wood more than 10 times and have gone a combined 5 for 24 (.208).
