Sunday afternoon, the Philadelphia Phillies will give the ball to A.J. Burnett as they face the Arizona Diamondbacks and Brandon McCarthy.  It will be the 6th start of the season for both pitchers.

A.J. Burnett has been better than his 0 – 1 record and 2.73 ERA suggests.  In 5 starts, he has pitched to 4 no decisions including his last start where he went 6.2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits with a walk and 5 strikeouts.  Those are decent numbers for the 37 year-old who went 10 – 11 with an ERA of 3.30 in 30 starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season.

In 2013, Burnett didn’t face the Diamondbacks but the veteran right-hander has seen many on the Arizona roster before.  Arizona’s Aaron Hill has seen Burnett the most with 7 hits (including a home run) and 3 RBIs in 22 at-bats.

Brandon McCarthy is still chasing that 1st win of the season after a loss in his last start dropped him to 0 – 4 with an ERA of 6.23.  In that start, McCarthy surrendered 5 runs on 7 hits (including a homer) in 5 innings while walking 2 and striking out 6.  Last season, McCarthy was 5 – 11 with a 4.53 ERA in 22 starts. 

In 2013, McCarthy pitched to a no decision in his only start against the Phillies.  It was a great start for him though as he pitched 8 innings of shutout ball while allowing 7 hits and no walks with 5 strikeouts.   McCarthy has done well against most of the Philadelphia lineup but he has allowed Freddy Galvis to go 3 for 3 against him.
