Sunday afternoon, the Oakland Athletics and Drew Pomeranz will take on the Toronto Blue Jays and J.A. Happ. It will be the 4th start and 13th appearance for Pomeranz while Happ makes his 5th start and 8th appearance.
Drew Pomeranz has won all three of his starts and comes into this one with a 3 – 1 record and an ERA of 0.94. In his last outing, he went 5 innings and allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Pomeranz has yet to allow a run in any of his starts and has given up just 8 hits in those starts. Pomeranz has already posted better numbers this season than he did in 2013 when he went 0 – 4 with an ERA of 6.23 in 4 starts and 4 relief appearances for the Colorado Rockies.
Last season, Pomeranz didn’t face the Blue Jays and he has only faces two hitters in the Toronto lineup. Jose Reyes is 0 for 2 against Pomeranz while Melky Cabrera is 1 for 2.
J.A. Happ picked up his 2nd straight win in his last start and that means he will come into this game with a 3 -1 record with a 4.37 ERA. In his last start, Happ gave up 4 runs on 7 hits (including a home run) in 5 innings of work. He walked 2 while striking out 6. If Happ continues to have decent starts, he should do better than last season when he went 5 - 7 with a 4.56 ERA in 18 starts.
In 2013, Happ pitched to a no decision in his only start against the A’s despite a 7 inning effort where he allowed just a run on 3 hits (including a home run). Happ will have to watch out for Oakland’s Yoenis Cespedes because although Cespedes is only 1 for 4 against Happ, he has 3 RBIs.
