Wednesday night, the Oakland Athletics will give the ball to Jesse Chavez as they face the Texas Rangers and Robbie Ross.  It will be the 6th start for both pitchers.

Jesse Chavez has only factored in one decision this season but his 1 – 0 record and 2.32 ERA reflect how well he has pitched.  And Oakland has won every game that he has started. In his last outing, Chavez took a beating though as he allowed 5 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.  In 2013, Chavez went 2 – 4 with a save and a 3.92 ERA in 35 relief appearances. 

Last season, Chavez worked out of the bullpen and didn’t start against the Rangers.  But he did have a 0 - 1 record with an ERA of 6.52 in 6 appearances against the Rangers.  Texas’ Prince Fielder only has 5 at-bats against Chavez but he has 3 hits (including a homer) and 2 RBIs against the right-hander. 

Robbie Ross pitched a no decision in his last start that left his record at 1 – 1 but saw his ERA rise to 2.45. In that start, Ross gave up 2 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings without issuing a walk and striking out 5.  Last season, Ross made 65 appearances out of the bullpen and compiled a record of 4 – 2 with an ERA of 3.03.

In 2013, Ross made 8 appearances against the A’s with an ERA of 7.11.  Ross will have to watch out for Oakland’s Brandon Moss.  Moss is a .375 hitter with 3 hits and 2 RBIs in 8 at-bats against the left-hander.
