Tuesday night, the Oakland Athletics and Drew Pomeranz will face Jake Odorizzi and the Tampa Bay Rays. Pomeranz will be making his 3rd start and 12th appearance of the season as Odorizzi makes his 9th start.

Drew Pomeranz improved his record to 3 – 1 and dropped his ERA to 1.14 after getting the win in his last start.  In that outing, Pomeranz pitched 5 innings of shutout ball and allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8.  In his 2 starts, Pomeranz has yet to allow a run.  Last season, Pomeranz went 0 – 4 with an ERA of 6.23 in 4 starts and 4 relief appearances for the Colorado Rockies.

In 2013, Pomeranz didn’t face the Rays and he has only seen two members of the Tampa Bay roster in his career.  Logan Forsythe is 2 of 6 and Ryan Hanigan is 2 for 2 against the left-hander. 

Jake Odorizzi took his record to 2 – 3 and lowered his ERA to 4.89 after an impressive start his last time out.  In the outing, Odorizzi pitched 6 innings of shutout ball and allowed just a run and 2 walks while striking out 7.  Odorizzi has 18 strikeouts in his last 11 innings.  Last season, Odorizzi had 22 strikeouts as he went 0 – 1 with a save and a 3.94 ERA in 4 starts and 3 relief appearances.

In 2013, Odorizzi didn’t face the A’s and he has no experience against the Oakland lineup.  But if he keeps up the strikeouts, he should have no problem at all.
