Right-hander Jason Hammel will be making his first start for the Oakland Athletics when they take on Matt Cain and the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night.

Before being traded to the A's, Jason Hammel made his last start for the Cubs last Friday and came away with his eighth win of the year by beating the Washington Nationals. He pitched six innings in that start and gave up just two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out seven. In 108.2 innings, Hammel has only given up 88 hits and has struck out 104 batters.

Veteran Michael Morse has three hits in his eight at-bats versus Hammel and is the only player on the Giants with a home run off of the right-hander. Catcher Buster Posey has just one hit against him in eight at-bats.

Last Friday, right-hander Matt Cain lost his seventh game of the season when he was defeated by the San Diego Padres on the road. He pitched 6.1 innings in that game and gave up two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six batters and walking three. Through 14 starts, Cain is now 1-7 with a 4.27 ERA, but he has only given up 76 hits in 84.1 innings.
