Thursday afternoon, the Oakland Athletics will give the ball to Drew Pomeranz as they square off against the New York Yankees and Masahiro Tanaka. Pomeranz will make his 6th start and 15th appearance as Tanaka makes his 12th start.

Drew Pomeranz improved his record to 5 – 2 with an ERA of 2.37 after getting the win in his last start.  In that outing, Pomeranz gave up 5 runs on 4 hits (including 2 home runs) in 5.1 innings of work.  He walked 3 and struck out 5.  The win marked the 4th in 5 starts for Pomeranz. Last season, Pomeranz was 0 – 4 with an ERA of 6.23 in 4 starts and 4 relief appearances for the Colorado Rockies.   

In 2013, Pomeranz didn’t face the Yankees and he has only faced 2 of their hitters in his career.  Carlos Beltran is 2 for 8 against Pomeranz while Alfonso Soriano is 1 for 3 with a homer.

Masahiro Tanaka continues to roll over the competition and he added yet another win in his last outing.  Tanaka took his record to 8 - 1 with a 2.06 ERA after allowing just a run on 4 hits in 8 innings of work.  He walked 2 while striking out 9.  Tanaka is on pace for one of the best seasons any rookie pitcher has ever had in the Majors.

Even without any experience against the A’s, Tanaka should be formidable against Oakland.
