Tuesday night, the Oakland Athletics will take the field behind Scott Kazmir as they face the New York Yankees and Hiroki Kuroda. Both pitchers will be making their 12th starts of the season.

Scott Kazmir improved his record to 6 – 2 with a 2.36 ERA after getting the win in his last start.  In that outing, Kazmir pitched a complete game and allowed just a run (on a solo homer) on 6 hits without issuing a walk as he struck out 8. Kazmir should have no problem posting better results this season than he did in 2013 when he went 10 – 9 with a 4.04 ERA in 29 starts for the Cleveland Indians.

Last season, Kazmir lost his only start against the Yankees after giving up 4 runs on 7 hits (including a home run) in 6 innings. In his career, Kazmir has pitched well against the Yankees but his will have to watch out for Derek Jeter. Although Jeter is just a .143 hitter against Kazmir, he has 2 homers and 7 RBIs against the left-hander.

Hiroki Kuroda picked up a win in his last start and that took his record to 4 – 3 with a 4.57 ERA.  In that outing, Kuroda allowed 3 runs on 9 hits in 5.2 innings of work.  He struck out 3 without issuing a single walk.  Kuroda still has a chance to post better numbers than last season when he went 11 – 13 with a 3.31 ERA in 32 starts.

In 2013, Kuroda pitched to a no-decision in his only start against the A’s despite allowing just 2 runs on 2 hits in 8 innings of work.  Kuroda has held the A’s to just a .197 average in his career with only 15 hits,  a home run and 6 RBIs in 76 at-bats.
