Sunday afternoon, the Oakland Athletics and Jesse Chavez will take on the Cleveland Indians and Justin Masterson. Chavez will make his 9th start as Masterson makes his 10th.

Jesse Chavez had a solid start his last time out that boosted his record to 3 – 1 with an ERA of 2.44.  In that outing, Chavez went 8 innings and allowed just 2 runs (both on solo homers) on 5 hits with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.  If not for the two long balls, Chavez’s line would have been spectacular.  In 2013, Chavez gave up just 3 homers as he worked exclusively from the bullpen.  He compiled a record of 2 – 4 with a save and an ERA of 3.92 in 35 relief appearances.

Last season, Chavez was torched in his only appearance against the Indians. He allowed 3 runs on 3 hits in just 1.2 innings of work.  And Chavez will have to keep an eye on Ryan Raburn.  Raburn is 3 of 5 with 4 RBIs against Chavez.     

Justin Masterson comes into this one with a 2 – 2 record and an ERA of 4.31 after losing in his last outing.  In that start, Masterson surrendered 5 runs on 6 hits (including a homer) in 5.1 innings as he walked 3 and struck out 4.   Last season, Masterson went 14 – 10 with an ERA of 3.45 in 29 starts and 3 relief appearances.

In 2013, Masterson was 1 – 1 with a 3.68 ERA in 2 starts against Oakland.   This season, he pitched to a no decision against the A’s despite 7 innings of shutout ball and just 3 hits allowed.
