Still fighting for a chance to win the American League West, the Oakland Athletics will travel to U.S. Cellular Field to take on the Chicago White Sox. The Athletics have been slipping in the standings during the second half of the season and will look to get back into a groove when right-hander Sonny Gray (13-8) takes on right-hander Hector Noesi (8-9).

Noesi has had an up and down season for the White Sox in 2014. He is under .500 and has a 4.70 ERA, but he has pitched well in many games where he didn’t register a decision. In 147.1 innings, he has allowed 77 earned runs off 156 hits. He does have 110 strikeouts and just 48 walks this season, but has allowed 23 home runs, which is a number that will have to change if he ever wants to be a consistent option in the White Sox rotation.

This is just the second season in what is set to be a long and successful career for Gray. The 24-year-old from Nashville, Tenn. has a 3.25 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and .236 BAA. That being said, he pitched better in the first half of the season and has struggled a bit in his past 7 starts. He is just 1-5 during that time and has seen his ERA rise from 2.65. Despite his struggles, he will still be an important asset for the Athletics in their quest to reach the playoffs this season and in the future.
