Friday night, Tommy Milone gets the call for the Oakland Athletics as they take on Wei-Yin Chen and the Baltimore Orioles. It will be Milone’s 11th start and Chen’s 12th. 

Tommy Milone pitched to a no-decision in his last outing and he comes into this start with a 3 – 3 record and an ERA of 3.60. In that start, Milone allowed just 3 runs on 9 hits (including a homer) in 6 innings of work.  He walked 1 while striking out 3.  Milone is putting together some solid starts and he should be able to equal or match last season’s record of 12 - 9 with an ERA of 4.14 in 26 starts and 2 relief appearances.  

In 2013, Milone lost his only start against the Orioles after allowing just a run on 6 hits in 6.2 innings.  The Baltimore lineup has done well against Milone with a collective .293 average, 17 hits, 2 homers and 5 RBIs in 58 at-bats.

Wei-Yin Chen took his record to 6 – 2 with an ERA of 4.26 after getting the win his last time out.  In that start, Chen gave up just a run on 4 hits with a walk and 6 strikeouts.   Even though Chen has cooled off from his hot start, he still can post better numbers than 2013’s when he went 7 – 7 with a 4.07 ERA in 23 starts.

Last season, Chen won his only start against the A’s after pitching 8 shutout innings and allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.  Overall, Chen has been able to handle the Oakland lineup, holding them to a .233 average with 10 hits and 3 RBIs in 43 at-bats.
