Tuesday night, the New York Yankees will give the ball to David Phelps as they face the Toronto Blue Jays and Mark Buehrle.  Phelps will make his 10th start and 19th appearance as Buehrle makes his 16th start.

David Phelps won his 2nd straight game his last time out and that gave him a 3 – 4 record with a 3.86 ERA coming in to this start. In the win, Phelps gave up 2 runs on 6 hits (including a homer) in 7 innings.  He walked 2 and struck out 7.  The two wins came behind a 4 game losing streak for Phelps and it looks like he may have turned a corner.  Last season, Phelps was 6 – 5 with a 4.98 ERA in 12 starts and 10 relief appearances.

In 2013, Phelps was 2 – 0 with a 3.00 ERA in a start and 4 relief appearances against the Blue Jays.  This season, he has faced Toronto twice.  He pitched 2 innings in relief against them early in the season and he just beat them in his last outing.

Mark Buehrle lost his 3rd straight in his last start and that dropped his record to a still impressive 10 – 4 with a 2.32 ERA.  In the loss, Buehrle surrendered 3 runs and 6 hits (including a homer) in 6 innings of work.  He walked 2 while striking out 4.  Since starting the year by going 10 – 1, Buehrle seems to have slowed down but he is still one of baseball’s best pitchers. He is well ahead of the numbers that he posted in 2013 when he went 12 – 10 with a 4.15 ERA in 33 starts.

Last season, Buehrle was 0 – 2 with a 5.04 ERA in 4 starts against the Yankees.  He just took a loss against New York and will be looking for redemption in this start.
