Saturday afternoon, the New York Yankees will give the ball to Michael Pineda (3 – 2, 1.95 ERA) as they square off against the Toronto Blue Jays and Drew Hutchison (8 – 11, 4.68 ERA). Pineda will make his 8th start of the year and Hutchison will make his 27th.
Michael Pineda looked good in his last start and he came away with a win. In 6.1 innings of work, Pineda allowed just a run (on a solo homer) and 5 hits as he struck out 5 without issuing any walks. Pineda has had a short season due to a 10 game suspension for using pine tar on baseballs in April and due to a shoulder injury that sidelined him until the beginning of August. Pineda had already missed most of the 2013 season after undergoing shoulder surgery. But in his 7 starts this season, he has never allowed more than 2 runs in a start.
Even though he has missed a lot of time in the last 2 seasons, he has some experience against the Blue Jays to draw on for this start. Toronto is batting .226 against Pineda with 14 hits, 3 homers and 7 RBIs in 62 at-bats.
Drew Hutchison pitched to a no-decision in his last start despite some solid work on the mound. Hutchison allowed just a run on 6 hits in 6 innings as he walked 2 batters and struck out 7. But without any run support, Hutchison wasn’t able to get a much deserved victory. And victories have been few and far between for Hutchison in recent weeks. He is 3 - 5 in his last 10 outings. Hutchison missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
This season against the Yankees, Hutchison is just 1 -3 in 4 starts. New York is batting .325 against him with 25 hits, 4 homers and 15 RBIs in 77 at-bats.
