Tuesday night, Michael Pineda (3 -4, 2.20 ERA) will toe the rubber for the New York Yankees in their meeting against Jake Odorizzi (10 -12, 4.08 ERA) and the Tampa Bay Rays.  It will be the 11th start for Pineda and the 30th start for Odorizzi.

Michael Pineda had a relatively good performance in his last start but he didn’t factor in the decision.  Pineda gave up 4 runs (on two 2-run homers) and 10 hits in 7.1 innings.  He struck out 2 without issuing any walks. The 4 runs surrendered in his last start were the most for him all season. Pineda’s season has been cut short by injuries and a suspension but he has pitched well even though the numbers don’t illustrate that.  He is only 1- 3 in 6 starts since rejoining the team in mid-August.  He missed most of the 2013 season after shoulder surgery.

Pineda’s last start was against the Rays and if he can keep the runs to a minimum, he could pitch his way to a win.

Jake Odorizzi was run over in his last start and he ended up taking the loss.  Odorizzi was tagged for 6 runs and 5 hits (including 2 homers) in just 4.1 innings.  He struck out 2 while walking 3.  Odorizzi has been really good and really bad this season and after 2 really good starts, he was real bad in his last.  In his last 10 outings, he is 5 – 4.  Last season, Odorizzi posted a record of 0-1-1 with a 3.94 ERA in 4 starts and 3 relief appearances.

Odorizzi got the save in his only appearance against the Yankees in 2013.  This season, he is 1 - 1 in 3 starts (including his last) against New York.
