Thursday afternoon, Hiroki Kuroda (9 – 8, 3.94 ERA) takes the hill for the New York Yankees as they square off against Kyle Lobstein (0 – 0, 4.76 ERA) and the Detroit Tigers.  It will be the 27th start for Kuroda and the 1st start and 2nd appearance for Lobstein.

Hiroki Kuroda notched his 2nd straight victory in his last start.  In the win, Kuroda allowed 2 runs and 5 hits over 6 innings as he walked 2 batters and struck out 6.  In recent starts, Kuroda has hovered around the 2 to 3 run mark in runs allowed and that has helped him to a 4 – 3 record in his last 10 outings.  In 2013, Kuroda finished the season with an 11 -13 record and a 3.31 ERA in 32 starts. 

Last season, Kuroda didn’t face the Tigers but he just took the mound against them in early August.  In that outing, Kuroda pitched to a no-decision after allowing 3 runs and 6 hits (including a homer) in 7 innings.

Kyle Lobstein will make his first start in the Majors just days after making his Major League debut.  Lobstein pitched 5.2 innings in relief just a few days ago and allowed 3 runs and 4 hits while walking 4 and striking out 3.  Before getting the call, Lobstein was at Triple-A Toledo where he went 9 – 11 with a 4.07 ERA in 25 starts and a relief appearance.

Without any experience against the Yankees, Lobstein will have to rely on the scouting report as well as the advice of his fellow pitchers to get an idea of what he will see against the Yankee lineup.
