Tuesday night, the New York Yankees will take the field behind Brandon McCarthy (8 – 12, 4.01 ERA) as they take on the Detroit Tigers and Rick Porcello (14 – 8, 3.10 ERA).  It will be McCarthy’s 27 start and Porcello’s 25th start and 26th appearance.

Brandon McCarthy broke his 2 game losing streak by pitching a complete game shutout in his last start.  McCarthy gave up 4 hits and struck out 8 without issuing any walks as he went the distance.  Since coming over from the Arizona Diamondbacks, McCarthy has been an extremely reliable starter for the Yankees and is 5 – 2 in 8 starts for New York.  Overall, he is 7 – 2 in his last 10 outings.  McCarthy was just 5 – 11 with a 4.52 ERA in 22 starts for the Diamondbacks last season.   

In 2013, McCarthy didn’t face the tigers but he has a start against them earlier this season.  In that outing, McCarthy got the win after holding Detroit to a run on 5 hits in 5.2 innings.

Rick Porcello went the distance in his last outing and got the complete game shutout victory.  Porcello allowed just 3 hits while striking out 4 without issuing any walks.  The win ended a 3 game losing streak for the right-hander and was his 3rd complete game shutout of the year.  Porcello has had a rough go of it in his last 10 starts and is just 4 - 4 in that stretch.  Last season, Porcello went 13 – 8 with a 4.32 ERA in 29 starts and 3 relief appearances. 

In 2013, Porcello pitched to a no-decision in his only start against the Yankees.  In early August, Porcello lost his only start against the Yankees this season.
