Tuesday night the New York Yankees will take the field behind Masahiro Tanaka as they do battle against the Boston Red Sox and Jon Lester.  It will be Tanaka’s 4th start and Lester’s 5th. 

Masahiro Tanaka has been as good as advertised since coming over from Japan to pitch for the Yankees.  In his last start, Tanaka went 8 scoreless innings with just 2 hits, a walk and 10 strikeouts.  The win pushed his record to 2 – 0 with a 2.05 ERA.  Tanaka has walked only 2 batters while striking out 18 in his 3 starts.

In just his first major league season here in the United States, Tanaka is facing many teams for the first time.  A good scouting report will definitely help him in his first outing against the Red Sox.

Jon Lester is coming off a great start of his own.  In 8 innings of work, Lester gave up a run on 7 hits without a walk while striking out 8.  With his second straight win, Lester is now 2 – 2 on the season with an ERA of 2.17.  Last season, Lester was 15 – 8 with a 3.75 ERA in 33 starts.

In 2013, Lester faced the Yankees 4 times and came away with a 2 – 1 record and a 3.29 ERA. He will need to stay away from New York’s Derek Jeter. In his final season, Jeter will be looking to improve on his career .333 average, 1 homer and 8 RBIs against Lester.
