Saturday afternoon, the New York Yankees will take the field behind Masahiro Tanaka (13 – 4, 2.47 ERA) as they face the Boston Red Sox and Joe Kelly (5 – 4, 4.15 ERA).  Tanaka makes his 20th start as Kelly makes his 17th.

Masahiro Tanaka picked up the victory in his last outing after making his return from the disabled list.  In 5.1 innings of work, Tanaka surrendered just a run on 5 hits.  He struck out 4 batters without allowing any walks. It was Tanaka’s first start since July 8th. Even though he missed 2 months with a partially torn UCL, Tanaka has still had a spectacular season.  In his last 10 starts, he is an impressive 7 - 3. 

This season, Tanaka has faced the Red Sox twice and he is 1 - 1 in those encounters.  Boston is batting .286 against Tanaka with 14 hits, 4 homers and 4 RBIs in 49 at-bats.

Joe Kelly added his 2nd straight victory in his last start.  Kelly gave up 2 runs and 3 hits in a 7 inning effort. He walked 3 batters and struck out 5.  Kelly has been on a roll as of late with a 3 -1 record in his last 4 starts. He is 3 -2 in his 9 starts for the Red Sox since coming over from the St. Louis Cardinals and 3 -3 in his last 10 starts overall.  Last season, Kelly went 10 – 5 with a 2.69 ERA in 15 starts and 22 appearances for the Cardinals.

Kelly didn’t face the Yankees in 2013, but he has seen them once since joining the Red Sox.  He picked up the win in that outing after allowing 3 runs and 5 hits (including a homer) in 6.2 innings.
