Saturday afternoon, the New York Mets will give the ball to Bartolo Colon as they take on the Washington Nationals and Gio Gonzalez.  Both pitchers will be making their 9th starts of the season.

Bartolo Colon took a beating in his last start but he luckily got out without getting a decision.  In that outing, Colon gave up 7 runs on 11 hits (including a homer) in just 5.2 innings of work.  He didn’t walk anyone as he struck out 4.  Colon’s ERA rose to 5.84 as his record stayed at 2 – 5.   Last season, Colon went 18 – 6 with an ERA of 2.65 in 30 starts with the Oakland A’s. 

In 2013, Colon didn’t face the Nationals but he went up against them in his first start of the year.  In that game, he took the loss after surrendering 3 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings.

Gio Gonzalez took his 2nd straight loss in his last start that dropped his record to 3 – 3 with an ERA of 3.97.  In that start, Gonzalez was lit up for 7 runs on 9 hits in 4.1 innings.  Gonzalez walked 3 and struck out 4.  In 2013, Gonzalez was 11 - 8 with a 3.36 ERA in 32 starts.

Last season, Gonzalez was 2 - 0 with a 2.25 ERA in 3 starts against the Mets.  This season, Gonzalez won his opening start against the Mets with a 6 inning effort where he allowed just a run on 3 hits with a walk and 6 strikeouts.
