On Monday night, Jonathon Niese will return from the disabled list and make the start for the New York Mets when they go up against Roenis Elias and the Seattle Mariners.

Left-hander Jonathon Niese last made a start for the Mets back on June 28, when he was able to go six innings and pick up his fifth win of the season. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits in that outing while walking three batters and striking out five. He is currently 5-4 with a 2.96 ERA on the year and he has only given up eight home runs in 103.1 innings of work.

Mariners All-Star Robinson Cano has faced Niese 12 times and has four hits against him with a double and an RBI. Veteran Willie Bloomquist is 2-for-3 against him in his career with no strikeouts and two RBI.

In his last outing, rookie Roenis Elias lost his third game in a row when he was beaten by the Minnesota Twins at home. He went just 3.1 innings in that game and gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while striking out three batters and walking three. Elias is now 7-8 on the year with a 4.54 ERA and he has struck out 96 batters in 113 innings on the mound.

The Mets will get to face Elias for the first time on Monday. Right-handed hitters are currently batting .252 against him, while lefties have a .220 batting average against the left-hander.
