Friday night, the New York Mets will give Jacob deGrom the call as they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates and Brandon Cumpton.  Both pitchers will be making their 9th starts.

Jacob deGrom got his first career win in his last outing and that took his record to 1 - 4 with a 3.75 ERA. In the win, deGrom threw 7 scoreless innings and allowed just 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7.  It was the 2nd time this season that deGrom held the opposition scoreless and it was welcome after his last outing, which was a disaster. 

deGrom’s previous shutout effort was against the Pirates in late May.  He didn’t get the decision despite 6.2 innings of shutout ball where he allowed 5 hits and 5 walks with 4 strikeouts. 

Brandon Cumpton got the win in his last outing and he brings a 3 - 2 record with a 4.93 ERA into this start.  The last time out, Cumpton pitched shutout ball for 7 innings and surrendered just 2 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts.  Cumpton has already posted a better record than 2013 when he went 2- 1 with a 2.05 ERA in 5 starts and a relief appearance.

In 2013, Cumpton didn’t face the Mets but he has a start against them this season. In that start, Cumpton pitched to a no-decision after allowing 2 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings as he walked a batter and struck out 1.
