Thursday night, the New York Mets will take the field behind Zack Wheeler as they face the Philadelphia Phillies and David Buchanan. Wheeler will be making his 11th start as Buchanan makes his 2nd career start.

Zack Wheeler took his 2nd straight loss in his last start and that dropped his record to 1 – 5 with an ERA of 4.63.  In his last outing, Wheeler allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 6.2 innings of work as he walked 1 while striking out 7.  Wheeler threw 118 pitches for the 2nd time in 3 starts and that is way over his season average of 100.3 pitches per start.  Last season, Wheeler averaged 101.6 pitches per start in 17 starts as he posted a record of 7 – 5 and an ERA of 3.42. 

In 2013, Wheeler was 0 - 1 with a 3.18 ERA in 2 starts against the Phillies. Wheeler has pitched well against the Philadelphia lineup, holding them to a .235 batting average with 8 hits, a home run and 4 RBIs in 34 at-bats.

David Buchanan picked up the win in his Major League debut after a decent outing for a young pitcher. In that start, he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings without issuing a walk and striking out 2.   And with Phillies’ starter Cliff Lee out for the foreseeable future, Buchanan should get the chance to make a few more starts this season.   Buchanan was 5 – 1 with a 3.98 ERA in 9 starts for Philadelphia’s Triple-A affiliate in Lehigh Valley before getting called up.

The rookie right-hander should be able to handle the Mets if he studies the scouting report and takes whatever advice the rest of the pitching staff has to offer.
