Sunday afternoon, the New York Mets will send Jonathon Niese to the hill to face the Miami Marlins and Anthony DeSclafani.  It will be Niese’s 15th start and DeSclafani’s 4th.

Jonathon Niese saw his record fall to 3 – 4 with a 2.67 ERA after taking the loss in his last outing. In that start, Niese allowed 5 runs on 8 hits (including a homer) in 6 innings.  He walked a batter while striking out 3.  Niese is really delivering solid outings but the run support just isn’t there. There is still a chance for him to equal or surpass his results from 2013 when he posted an 8 – 8 record and a 3.71 ERA in 24 starts.

Last season, Niese was 1 – 0 with a 2.84 ERA in 3 starts against the Marlins.  This season, he pitched to a no-decision against the Marlins despite pitching 7 scoreless innings and allowing just 5 hits and a walk while striking out 6.

Anthony DeSclafani pitched to a no-decision in his last outing and that held his record at 1 – 1 with a 5.60 ERA. In that start, DeSclafani surrendered 4 runs on 6 hits (including a homer) as he walked a batter and struck out 5.  DeSclafani hasn’t looked that bad since getting called up from the Minors where he was 4 – 5 this year with a 3.92 ERA in 12 starts.

The rookie right-hander will be facing the Mets for the first time and he will have to look to the rest of the pitching staff and the scouting report to come up with a game plan for New York.
