Monday afternoon, the New York Mets will take the field behind Zack Wheeler (9 – 9, 3.44 ERA) as they square off against the Miami marlins and Henderson Alvarez (10 – 6, 2.75 ERA).   Wheeler will make his 28th start as Alvarez makes his 26th.

Zack Wheeler took his first loss in a while the last time out.  In 7 innings of work, Wheeler allowed 3 runs and 4 hits (including a homer) while walking 3 and striking out 7.  Before that loss, Wheeler hadn’t lost a game since late June.  He is 6 - 1 in his last 10 starts.  In his rookie campaign last season, Wheeler posted a record of 7 – 5 with a 3.42 ERA in 17 starts.

In 2013, Wheeler didn’t face the Marlins but he has seen them this season. In 4 starts against Miami, Wheeler is 2 -0.

Henderson Alvarez saw his 4 game win streak end with a loss in his last outing.  In defeat, Alvarez gave up 5 runs on 8 hits (including 2 homers) in 6.1 innings.  He walked a batter and struck out 3.  Alvarez had been on a roll prior to this loss and despite the loss, is still 6 – 3 in his last 10 starts.  Last season, Alvarez went 5 - 6 with a 3.59 ERA in 17 starts.

In 2013, Alvarez was 2 – 0 with a 1.26 ERA in 2 starts against the Mets.  This season he is 2 -1 against the Mets in 4 starts.
