Wednesday night the New York Mets will send Zach Wheeler to the hill to face Ervin Santana of the Atlanta Braves.   Wheeler will be making his second start of the season while Santana will be making his season debut.

Zach Wheeler started on Opening Day for the Mets and it was a decent outing although he ended up taking the loss after he didn’t get any run support.  Wheeler went 6 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits (including a home run) while walking 2 and striking out 6. 

During his rookie season in 2013, Wheeler faced the Braves three times and he had no problem with the Atlanta lineup.  His record was a perfect 3 – 0 with a 2.89 ERA and 17 strikeouts to go with 10 walks.   Despite the great numbers he will have to keep an eye on Freddie Freeman.   Freeman has 4 hits in 6 at-bats with a home run and 3 walks. 

Ervin Santana makes his first start in the majors this season after a rocky final start in AAA ball last week.  He gave up 6 runs and 5 hits in just over 5 innings in that start.  These weren’t impressive numbers but they might be expected from a pitcher without a winning record in his last three major league seasons.  With this start perhaps Santana can rebound from last season’s 9 – 10 record in 32 starts with an ERA of 3.24 (which was the lowest of his career). 

Santana hasn’t faced many of the Mets but he has seen a great deal of Curtis Granderson.  In 40 at-bats, Granderson has 11 hits (including 5 homers) and 9 RBIs.
