Wednesday afternoon, Phil Hughes will take the mound for the Minnesota Twins as they face Marcus Stroman and the Toronto Blue Jays. Hughes will be making his 13th start as Stroman makes his 3rd start and 8th appearance. 

Phil Hughes took his first loss in nearly 2 months in his last start and that dropped his record to a still impressive 6 - 2 with a 3.46 ERA. In that outing, Hughes settled into familiar territory as he gave up 3 homers along with 5 runs and 6 hits in the 6 inning effort. He struck out 7 without issuing a walk. Last season, Hughes had a lot of trouble with the long ball as he gave up 24 of them en route to a 4 – 14 record and a 5.19 ERA in 29 starts and a relief appearance for the New York Yankees.

In 2013, Hughes was 0 – 1 with a 4.05 ERA in 4 starts against the Blue Jays.  This season, Hughes took his first loss of the year against Toronto after allowing 4 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings of work.

Marcus Stroman picked up his 2nd straight win the last time out and that took his record to 3 – 0 with a 5.40 ERA.  In that outing, Stroman allowed just a run on 7 hits in 6 innings of work. He had 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.  Before getting called up in May, Stroman was 2 – 4 with a 3.03 ERA in 7 starts for the Blue Jays’ Triple-A club.     

Since the rookie right-hander has joined the starting rotation, he has won both of his starts while allowing just a run in each of those starts.   Even without any experience against the Twins, Stroman should do just fine.
