28-year-old starter Phil Hughes will take the mound for the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night and will face Tyson Ross and the San Diego Padres.

Phil Hughes followed up his best start of the season with another strong showing against the Boston Red Sox last week, but he finished with a no decision in that game. He made it through six innings in that start and gave up just one run on five hits while walking none and striking out a season-high eight batters. His ERA is now down to 3.61 on the year and he has given up just four home runs in 47.1 innings of work.

Carlos Quentin is hitless against Hughes in six plate appearances, while Seth Smith is 2-for-4 against him with a double and two walks. None of the current Padres have hit a home run off of Hughes.

Tyson Ross pitched seven strong innings against the Cincinnati Reds last week and was able to get his fifth win of the season. He allowed just one earned run in that game on three hits and walked five while striking out eight. Ross has now pitched seven innings in three consecutive starts and has lowered his ERA to 2.81 on the season.

Joe Mauer has three plate appearances against Ross in his career and has walked all three times. Eduardo Nunez is hitless in his three at-bats against the big right-hander.
