Saturday afternoon, Kevin Correia takes the hill for the Minnesota Twins as they face Masahiro Tanaka and the New York Yankees. Both pitchers will be making their 11th starts of the season. 

Kevin Correia took the loss in his last start and that dropped his record to 2 – 6 with an ERA of 6.34.  The outing wasn’t that bad as Correia gave up 4 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings with 5 strikeouts and no walks. But without much run support, Correia couldn’t escape the loss.   Correia wasn’t much better last season as he went 9 – 13 with a 4.18 ERA in 31 starts.

In 2013, Correia didn’t face the Yankees but he has seen most of the New York lineup in the past.  The Yankees’ Kelly Johnson could be an issue for Correia though as Johnson is batting .321 with 5 home runs and 10 RBIs against the right-hander. 

Masahiro Tanaka has truly been a gem for the New York Yankees this season.  He added another win in his last outing to take his record to 7 – 1 with a 2.29 ERA.  In that start, Tanaka surrendered just 1 run on 5 hits in 6.2 innings of work.  He walked 2 while striking out 6.  In his 1st season in the big leagues, Tanaka is averaging 10.06 strikeouts per 9 innings with just 15 pitches per innings pitched.

With the way that Tanaka has been pitching, the lack of experience against the Twins can’t really hurt him.   Minnesota can expect a tough opponent in the young Japanese right-hander.
