Sunday afternoon, Samuel Deduno gets the ball for the Minnesota Twins as they face Robbie Ray and the Detroit Tigers.  Deduno will be making his 2nd start and 9th appearance of the season as Ray makes his 2nd career major league start.

Samuel Deduno dropped to 0 – 2 with a 3.42 ERA after taking the loss in his first start of the season.  He went 5 innings and surrendered 4 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.  It’s possible that Deduno was not fully prepared for the start after working out of the bullpen to start the season. Last season, Deduno was 8 - 8 with a 3.83 ERA in 18 starts.

In 2013, Deduno was 1 - 1 with a 5.84 ERA in 2 starts against the Tigers.  Deduno has only faced 7 of the current Tigers but Andy Dirks will be one to watch out for.  Dirks is batting .462 with 2 doubles and a triple against Deduno.

Robbie Ray got the win in his first major league trip to the hill and he did well for a rookie pitcher. In 5.1 innings of work, Ray allowed just a run on 5 hits with a walk and 5 strikeouts.  He threw 86 pitches in just the 5.1 innings but it didn’t seem to hurt him at all.  He will bring a 1.69 ERA into his 2nd career start.

Ray might have handled the Houston Astros alright, but he will have a bigger test ahead of him in the Detroit Tigers.  It will be interesting to see what he learned from the scouting report and the rest of the pitching staff to prepare him for this game.
